So you’ve finally done it. You asked the person you were most interested in for a date and they agreed. Now, you’re feeling nervous because you want to make a spectacular first impression. There are a few things that you can do to make that happen.
Don’t Take Unnecessary Risks
Some people want to make an impression during their first date so much that they are willing to overreach in order to do it. There’s no rule that says a first date can’t be interesting, but going skydiving or bungie jumping is not everyone’s cup of tea.
If you really want to impress your date without going overboard, it’s best to know about the things that they are interested in beforehand. Barring that, going to an exciting restaurant, having a few drinks at a pleasant bar, or coffee at a stylish café are not bad options.
Avoid Boring Conversations
Dates live and die by the conversations that the two or more people taking part in it have. If you keep talking about things that only interest you and are boring the other person or persons, you are not going to have a very good time. There’s a time and place for talking about your job that involves typing in numbers. This doesn’t mean that you will never get to talk about it. Just not on the first date.
Having said that, you also shouldn’t go overboard when trying to find interesting topics. Start with their hobbies or favourite movies. Talk about what kind of music they like or if they have a favourite band. The more animated and excitable they get, the better.
Avoid Topics That Are Too Personal
Having talked about the matters above, there are topics that you should absolutely avoid on a first date. A great example is the matter of parents. Unless it’s the other person bringing it up, never ever go near that topic. The same goes for former lovers, embarrassing childhood stories, their innermost fantasies. Save those for next time.
Manage Your Expectations
Finally and this is important, you must always manage your expectations of the date. Aim for success, but don’t get too depressed if something doesn’t go exactly the way you wanted. Take things in stride and learn to laugh it off. You’ll make a better impression that way.
